RPSG Group, owners of two-time ISL champions ATK FC, acquired 80% stake of Mohun Bagan Football Club (India) Pvt. Ltd. This amalgamation of two footballing giants will surely bring back the glory days of Football in Kolkata – which is claimed to be the Mecca of Indian Football.
The merger will come into existence from June 1st, 2020 and the entity will compete in Hero ISL 2020-21 season. Also, MB members will continue getting discounted tickets for all home matches.
“RPSG Group is humbled and honoured to welcome Mohun Bagan with folded hands and open arms to the RPSG family. Personally, it’s an emotional reunion for me as my father late RP Goenka was a member of Mohun Bagan. We have decided the new club will be ATK-Mohun Bagan,” chairman of RPSG Group Sanjiv Goenka said while announcing the merger.
Mr. Swapan Sadhan Bose, Chairman, Mohun Bagan Football Club (India) Pvt. Ltd opined about cohesion of a 130 year old history with a practical and focused partner which assures bigger investment required to sustain in today’s competitive sporting environment.
Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia said “It’s good that Mohun Bagan is getting a good buyer but I think the colour and name has to be kept and the logo. Their history is very rich. It’s good that RPSG Group is buying it, they are a very professional company. In fact, I had advised Sanjiv Goenka to buy Mohun Bagan and run the club together. That was the first time I told it to them. ”
Mohun Bagan management has welcomed the merger with open arms, hoping for revival of its glory days. The new football club will have brand names of ATK and Mohun Bagan. However, reaction of a few million ardents fans is still awaited on this historic merger.
